Starlink’s GPS-style cheat code is still in development, but experts believe its vulnerabilities could be exploited more effectively than previously thought. A team led by Zak Kassas from the Autonomous Systems Perception, Intelligence, and Navigation (ASPIN) Laboratory at The Ohio State University has demonstrated how their research could revolutionize satellite navigation. By analyzing signal timing and using Doppler measurements, they improved positioning accuracy from 8 meters to within 2 meters in just 20 seconds, a significant leap compared to traditional GPS systems. However, this approach also reveals a broader challenge: the limitations of current satellite optimization practices. Kassas explains that Starlink constantly adjusts signal beams to maximize coverage, which introduces unpredictable timing errors that affect positioning accuracy. To overcome these issues, the team employed Doppler technology and phased-array antennas, allowing them to capture signals from multiple satellites simultaneously. This method, proven in experiments involving ground vehicles, high-altitude balloons, and drones, suggests that similar techniques may work across various platforms, including ships in remote areas like Greenland’s Arctic. Kassas notes that while Starlink itself offers a solution, its partnerships with third-party networks like Orbcomm, Iridium, and OneWeb further expand access to such technologies. “We’re not just focusing on Starlink—we’re expanding our reach,” he says. As the tech evolves, the ability to integrate alternative navigation methods could redefine how people rely on global positioning systems in an increasingly connected world.
